Time Shelter
People yearn to escape into a happy past lost deep in their memories, wanting to relive it. But what happens when entire nations want to escape into the past? An original production by Jan Mikulášek based on the contemporary novel by Georgi Gospodinov, winner of the 2023 International Booker Prize. Gaustin, the hero and Gospodinov’s alter ego, has created time clinics where people suffering from memory loss get a chance to go back to the time they were at their best. As the story progresses, the illness (a kind of long-term amnesia) transforms into something that afflicts all of society. The world becomes the victim of a collective “Alzheimer’s disease”, which leads various European countries to hold a referendum in which their citizens get an opportunity to choose the historical era they want to live in.
