Patrik Ouředník

Europeana

But a lot of the people didn’t know that theory and kept on creating history as if nothing had ever happened.

Europeana: the history of Europe in the twentieth century depicted with a detached view, a dry sense of humour and bitter irony. This original dramatization is a fascinating commentary of the last century featuring war, the invention of bras or perforated toilet paper. Key historical moments receive the same attention as banal ones, thus creating a new view of our past. Through wit, irony, mystification, and hard facts rises a bizarre testimony of the world in the 20th century.

The book Europeana by Patrik Ouředník won the Most Interesting Book Award in 2001 in the public survey of the Lidové Noviny Journal. It was also nominated for the Magnesia Litera Award for Fiction and was translated into more than two dozen languages.
