Systems of Tenderness
Marek Šindelka, winner of the Jiří Orten Prize, Czech Lion Award, and two Magnesia Litera awards, is one of the most prominent authors in contemporary Czech literature. In his latest novel, Systems of Tenderness, he explores the extent to which our lives are shaped by inherited genes as well as our family’s past and memory. The intimate story of pianist Ada Fischer weaves together music, the human body, and family relationships into a sensitive study of the legacy we carry without having chosen it.
Years later, Ada sets out to find her father. Her journey in search of one person gradually transforms into a journey into her own past, into memories, silences, and long-ago wrongs that are passed down from generation to generation.
As Marek Šindelka puts it, the novel is about “systems that have long fascinated me: music, the human body, but also the workings of the soul.” And also “about the human hand. Just think of how much it remembers!”
